  • Congratulations!

Posted on February 11, 2014 by Simply Paving

    Wow!

Every year that we run our photo competition we are absolutely astounded by the incredibly high standard of entries that we receive. This year has been no different. The only problem that this brings is the nigh on impossible task that we have here at Simply Paving of choosing a winner!

It's taken a great deal of thought to narrow down the entries to just one outright winner and ten runners-up and we've been very careful to take into account all aspects of each entry, from design of the project, right through to the level of workmanship on display.

We'd like to thank everyone who entered the competition and we're sure that the images that have been sent in will provide future customers with bucket loads of inspiration!

All that's left for us to do is to reveal the results...

Our first prize winner and the deserved recipient of a cheque for £500 are Ms Barbara Fawcett and Mr Joe Green of Cumbria with this truly awe inspiring entry, which pictures the StoneFlair by Bradstone Smooth Natural Sandstone Paving Rainbow.

Here in the Simply Paving office, we were all so in awe of how breathtakingly beautiful this seating area is and my word, what a view! The high level of workmanship on show has really put the finishing touch to an already enviable outdoor space and we would like to offer our sincere thanks for sharing this picture with us.

And now for the runners-up, who will each receive a cheque for £100. We're sure that you'll agree that all the projects are deserving of their prize.

Mrs Maria Joliffe from Hampshire has used Bradstone Woburn Rumbled Block Paving Autumn wonderfully to create this outdoor space, showing that block paving isn't necessarily just for driveways. It certainly looks like someone has been enjoying their new playground!

Bradstone Woburn Rumbled Block Paving Autumn

Here, Mr Chris Hearn from Kent has produced a stunning patio area using Bradstone Natural Slate Paving Vijaya Gold, which works perfectly in contrast with the buff brick walling. We were all in agreement that this looks a wonderful place to enjoy a relaxed summers day.

Bradstone Natural Slate Paving Vijaya Gold

Ms Judy Cowan designed and created this outdoor space for her 93 year old mother using StoneFlair by Bradstone Old Town Paving Grey-Green 900x600's and a StoneFlair by Bradstone Old Town Paving Grey-Green 2 Ring Circle. We're sure that you'll agree that the combination of the paving and the decorative aggregates make this beautiful and also ideal as a low maintenance garden.

StoneFlair by Bradstone Old Town Paving Grey-Green 900x600

This entry from Mr Patrick Allen from Devon has shown that functional can be beautiful. Using Bradstone Countrystone Walling Buff, they have been able to create a wall that not only serves as a perimeter boundary but also gives the property real kerb appeal! The buff block works perfectly in contrast with the Bradstone Textured Coping Grey.

    Bradstone Countrystone Walling Buff

Mr and Mrs Mayer from Kent again demonstrate how block paving can be a great option for creating a stunning patio area. They have created a contemporary outdoor space using a combination of materials and it's clear to see that the wooden sleepers and Bradstone StoneMaster Block Paving Mixed Shades Grey work perfectly together.

Bradstone StoneMaster Block Paving Mixed Shades Grey

Here we have another example of how striking the Bradstone Natural Slate Paving Vijaya Gold can be. We think you'll agree that Mr Darren Capehorn from Hampshire has created a stunning patio area which really highlights the natural beauty and variation exhibited in this stone. The Austin-Healey on display isn't bad looking either!

Bradstone Natural Slate Paving Vijaya Gold

Mr and Mrs Hawkes from Derbyshire have created a delightful patio area, combining the rich colour of the wooden decking with the rustic charm of the brick wall and the clean lines of the Bradstone Natural Slate Paving Blue-Black. The contrast of the traditional and modern works perfectly to create a relaxing space to enjoy a glass of wine!

    Bradstone Natural Slate Paving Blue-Black

Mr John Lawrie from North Lanarkshire has laid StoneFlair by Bradstone Smooth Natural Sandstone Paving Dune to create a charming outdoor area. Whilst this product can be used to create a contemporary feature, it has been used here in a more traditional setting to stunning effect.

StoneFlair by Bradstone Smooth Natural Sandstone Paving Dune

Another example of how mixing materials can create a superb finish. Here we have a lovely curved feature wall built using Bradstone Natural Sandstone Walling Autumn Green and combined with wooden decking. Mr Philip Older from Buckinghamshire has created this feature which adds real impact to the garden, choosing to dry lay the stone to give a more rustic feel.

Bradstone Natural Sandstone Walling Autumn Green

Last but by no means least, we have another excellent example of the StoneFlair by Bradstone Smooth Natural Sandstone Paving Dune, this time cut to give an elegant curved edge. We're sure you'll agree that the photograph sent in by Mr Russell Oxenden shows a superb level of workmanship.

StoneFlair by Bradstone Smooth Natural Sandstone Paving Dune

Congratulations to all of our winners and thank you to everyone who entered the competition. As with every year, the entries were all of an incredibly high standard and we here at Simply Paving had a very tough time reaching our decision. You will find many of the images entered into the competition will be featured on our website and in our gallery hopefully proving to be a source of inspiration to all of our customers.

  • The Responsible Supplier

Posted on April 26, 2012 by Simply Paving

At Simply Paving, we believe we have an ethical responsibility to ensure that the products we supply to you are made and sourced in such a way that minimises impact on communities and the environment.

Bradstone and Charcon have been focusing their efforts on developing sustainable solutions for well over a decade.

As part of Aggregate Industries, our main suppliers, Bradstone and Charcon are at the forefront of developments to increase the sustainability of domestic and commercial landscaping materials.

The journey began a decade ago, when the company took the decision to focus on and invest in developing sustainable solutions across their comprehensive range of innovative building products.

StoneFlair by Bradstone Panache Textured Paving Chocolate, Cream and Fudge

StoneFlair by Bradstone Panache Paving is manufactured using up to 83% recycled content.

Today, their investment is reaping rewards, with Aggregate Industries involved in a number of important and influential initiatives designed to make it easy for you, the consumer, to both recognise the most sustainable materials and identify those that have been most responsibly sourced.

    The Responsible Source

Chances are, you've heard the mention of responsible sourcing in the news recently. In straightforward terms, responsible sourcing is all about measuring and managing the specific environmental, social and economic impacts of any products, taking into account all elements including its manufacture, delivery, use, reuse and the ability for it to be recycled.

The good news is that Aggregate Industries is the first company in the world to achieve BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing Certificate from BRE Global.

    Breeam

As such, you can have absolute confidence that Bradstone products have been responsibly sourced and that you're getting the garden landscaping industry's most sustainable and future proof solutions. You don't just know what you're getting - you also know where you're getting it from.

    Ethical Trading Policy

When you see the ethical trading logo, it's your assurance that Bradstone is working harder than ever to ensure their imported natural stone products meet strict ethical criteria.

    Ethical Trading Initiative

Bradstone works with global suppliers to support the principles of the UN Global Compact and the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) base code. This is reflected in their policy and code of practice that aims to ensure that together with their suppliers, Aggregate Industries fulfil their obligations and responsibilities in order to maintain long-term benefits to all parties.

Examples of the criteria Bradstone insist their suppliers have to meet are:

    • Provision of a safe and healthy workplace.
    • Prohibition of child labour.
    • Paying wages which meet or exceed national legal standards.
    • Provision of employments rights.
    • Prohibition of bonded or forced labour.

    Carbon Labelling

Wouldn't it be great if you could see, at a glance, just how much carbon dioxide a product generates?

Now you can, thanks to carbon labelling, an initiative piloted by The Carbon Trust. In simple terms, the carbon footprint is the total amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases created during the life of a product from production to use and disposal.

    Life

Working with one of the industry's most respected governing bodies, the Building Research Establishment (BRE), Bradstone have developed a system that calculates the carbon footprint for any Bradstone landscaping product.

Bradstone Stone Master Block Paving Buff Shades

Bradstone StoneMaster Block Paving is manufactured using 50% reclaimed and recycled material.

Look out for these logos in the latest Bradstone brochure but also keep an eye out for them appearing on our website in the very near future.

  • And the winner is...

Posted on January 19, 2012 by Simply Paving

Another competition and another incredibly difficult decision.

Year after year, the standard of entries to our annual photographic competition has left us gobsmacked here in the Simply Paving office. This latest competition has been no different - we were in awe of the level of skill in both design and workmanship on show in the photographs - because of this we have chosen one outright winner who will receive a cheque of £500, a second place entry who will receive a cheque of £200 and nine runners-up who will each receive a cheque for £100.

Enough of us telling you how good the entries are, see for yourself below!

The first prize of £500 goes to Mrs Zoe and Mr Craig Lewis of North Yorkshire with this stunning entry, which really displays an incredible level of workmanship and demonstrates the clean lines and subtle tonal variations of the Bradstone StoneMaster Block Paving range. Using a mix of the three colours in the Buff shades; Dark Buff Cast, Dark Buff Washed and Light Buff Washed they have produced a very attractive driveway that perfectly replicates the look of natural sandstone block paving, which works perfectly with the brickwork of the house.

This year, for the first time we have chosen a second placed entry who will be cashing a cheque for £200.

Second place in our competition has been awarded to Mrs Jane Morris from Surrey who has created an absolutely beautiful outdoor space using Bradstone's Woburn Rumbled Block Paving Graphite. Using three sizes, the customer has created an eye-catching concentric circle design which adds interest, whilst we think you'll agree the Graphite colour works superbly with the wooden building, fencing and decking and also the planting scheme.

Our nine runners-up, each winning a prize of £100 are:

Mr Kevin Paterson from Kent who has used Bradstone Textured Paving Grey 600 x 600's to fantastic effect, creating this stunning contemporary outdoor space. Although, this product is part of our Value Range the finished job is clearly of very high quality, underlining just what can be achieved with any of our products.

Here, Mr Daniel Jones from Shropshire demonstrates how using a combination of materials can produce a very effective modern look. The decking, trellis and pergola work incredibly well when used alongside the StoneFlair by Bradstone Vogue Paving and the StoneFlair by Bradstone Polished Natural Sandstone Paving Fossil Buff.

Mr Darren Ayres from Cambridgeshire has produced a stunning outdoor space using StoneFlair by Bradstone Polished Natural Sandstone Paving Fossil Buff. It looks a wonderful place to enjoy a relaxed summers evening, perhaps even with a few beers or a bottle of wine!

In this photograph, Mrs Jennifer Floutier from Derbyshire shows that practical can be beautiful. Using Bradstone Woburn Rumbled Infilta Permeable Block Paving Rustic they have been able to create a driveway that is not only pleasing on the eye but also conforms to the legislation regarding paving the front of your home. For more information on the laying of Bradstone's range of Permeable Block Paving click here.

Mr John West from Cambridgeshire again demonstrates how one of our Value Range products can transform your outdoor space without spending the earth! This is more of a traditional feel than the earlier entry and uses Bradstone Weathered Riven Paving Weathered Cotswold 450 x 450's to create a stunning patio incorporating an access ramp.

Another example of how mixing materials can create a superb contemporary finish. Here Mr Martin Markcrow from Oxfordshire has combined wooden beds with Bradstone Decorative Aggregates Nordic Spar and StoneFlair by Bradstone Panache Long Aspect Black Textured to create both a dining area and pathways between planted areas. I think you'll agree, this photograph could have been taken straight out of Bradstone's new brochure.

Mr Mike Ellis from Flintshire has used StoneFlair by Bradstone Polished Natural Sandstone Paving Rainbow to create a charming outdoor dining area. The paving, decking and furniture work perfectly together and you can just imagine enjoying a summer salad here, unwinding after a day at work.

Ten out of ten on our next entry for both effort and Photoshop skills (we want that number plate)! Mr Phil Sutton from Cornwall has created a stunning driveway using Bradstone's Woburn Rumbled Block Paving Autumn. First impressions are important and the customer has given his property an extra touch of class and real kerb appeal.

You could be sat somewhere in the Mediterranean, but in fact you'd be sat in the garden of Mr Ray Lane from Kent. Using Bradstone Tile Paving Mellow Terracotta 300 x 300's the customer has evoked all the spirit, charm and warmth associated with true terracotta tiles.

Congratulations to all of our winners and thank you to everyone who entered the competition. The entries were all of an incredibly high standard and we here at Simply Paving had a very tough time reaching our decision. You will find many of the images entered into the competition will be featured on our website and in our gallery hopefully proving to be a source of inspiration to all of our customers.

  • Congratulations!

Posted on January 11, 2011 by Simply Paving

After a huge number of fantastic entries, Simply Paving are absolutely delighted to announce the results of our latest competition.

The quality of the photographs we have received is incredibly high and the level of workmanship on show is superb, so much so that we simply couldn't limit the number of prizes given to just six entrants as with previous competitions. As such we have selected one outright winner who will receive the first prize of £500 and ten runners-up who will each receive £100.

The winner taking the first prize of £500 is Mrs Linda MacLiver from Glasgow, with this stunning entry which really captures the beautiful tonal variations and elegant clean lines of the Modena Paving in Sunset Buff from StoneFlair by Bradstone.

The winning entry wonderfully demonstrates the use of different materials to create an area that is not only eye-catching, but also perfectly practical for entertaining on and making the most of those sun-baked summer days that we're all longing for.

Our ten runners-up, each winning a prize of £100 are:

Mrs Inna John from Stevenage, Hertfordshire has created a contemporary outdoor space using Natural Granite Paving in Silver Grey from StoneFlair by Bradstone with its straight machine cut edges and textured top surface.

Mr Keith Razzell from Woking, Surrey with Yorkvale Paving in Antique Gold from Bradstone. This product with its riven surface profile and irregular fettled edges has been expertly laid using the three sized Tudor pattern.

Mr Simon Jaggard-Inglis from Claybrooke Magna, Leicestershire has used Natural Limestone Paving in Blue-Black from Bradstone with its softer hand cut edges and subtly riven surface lending an exceptional quality finish to the modern design.

Mr John Woods from Glasgow with Natural Slate Paving in Vijaya Gold from Bradstone. As you can see from the photograph, Natural Slate Paving offers outstanding natural beauty with every individual paviour unique in appearance featuring its own distinctive colours and shades.

Mr Craig Evans from Millom, Cumbria with Natural Sandstone Paving in Sunset Buff from Bradstone, using both sizes of circle and randomly laid paving. This product offers a wealth of design possibilities with its unique shape, colour and texture making it an ideal solution for either traditional or contemporary gardens.

Mr Tim Miller from London with Old Town Paving and Walling in Weathered Limestone from StoneFlair by Bradstone. This paving solution looks to the past for inspiration, replicating the look and feel of old weathered York flagstones, whilst the complimentary walling helps create an attractive boundary to the patio area.

Mr Roy Underhill from Christchurch, Dorset with Monksbridge Block Paving in Croft from Bradstone. This block paving solution is designed to give your driveway a predominantly traditional feel and rustic look, with a range of subtle hues and a weather worn appearance.

Mr Mark Hamer from Skelmersdale, Lancashire has created a sleek and sophisticated look using Panache Ground Paving in White and Black and Natural Polished Sandstone Paving in Silver Grey from StoneFlair by Bradstone.

Mr Andy Moffat from Glasgow has created a wonderfully traditional patio area with Weathered Riven Paving in Autumn Cotswold from Bradstone (sealed). This moulded paving solution provides a convincing aged and worn stone appearance, thanks to fettled style edges.

Mr Acland from Taunton, Somerset has been very inventive with the use of Driveway Block Paving in Autumn, Buff and Charcoal from Bradstone. This hard-wearing and durable paving solution offers a wealth of mix and match possibilities and is available in seven colour options.

Congratulations to all of our winners and thank you to everyone who entered the competition. The entries were all of an incredibly high standard and we here at Simply Paving had a very tough time reaching our decision. • General Information and After Care

Posted on November 24, 2010 by Simply Paving

In the final part of our Simply Do It Yourself series we highlight some important information regarding the products we supply.

    Colours

It's the natural colour variations in Bradstone Natural Sandstone Fossil Buff that make it so covetable.

The colours depicted on our website are as accurate as modern technology allows. Tonal variations are evident in all manufactured and natural stone products; we therefore recommend that colours are judged from actual materials.

This is of significant importance when selecting a natural stone product which, by its very nature, will exhibit considerable deviations from slab to slab. It is important to view a range of samples to acknowledge the authentic diversity in colours, texture and markings.

Manufactured products are designed to simulate natural stone and naturally occurring aggregates are utilised, therefore variation between batches can occur. To produce an overall natural appearance when using two or more packs of product we suggest that individual products are drawn from each pack and mixed on site at the onset of the project.

Reconstructed stone products will weather in a similar way to natural stone, therefore the effect of the elements and site conditions may cause some colour change dependent on the degree of exposure.

Manufactured paving is designed to reflect the tonal variations present in natural stone.

After laying, some natural stone products may exhibit a brown colouration when oxidation of any iron content occurs.

    Maintenance/Cleaning

Sealants such as Signo Flexiguard can help protect porous products against ingrained soiling from dirt, staining from oil and water based contaminants and even moss and algae growth.

Regular maintenance is required to keep the overall appearance of the product in pristine condition. We recommend thoroughly washing paved areas with warm soapy water and brushing off with a stiff broom three or four times a year.

High pressure washers are not recommended for use on wet cast manufactured paving.

Simply Paving cannot be held responsible for the possible effects or damage caused by the contamination or application of some chemically based products which come into contact with a concrete surface e.g. some weed killers and acid or alkaline based cleaners.

Common salt should not be used to de-ice wet cast paving. To prevent possible surface damage always use a proprietary brand of de-icing product expressly formulated for use on concrete.

    Drainage

When laying a patio or path close to a house or dwelling it is essential that the finished paving surface level is at least 150mm below damp course level and should slope away from the building. A fall of 1:60 is generally sufficient). All paved areas should be gently sloping to allow excess water to be directed away and should always be laid on well drained ground. Any base preparation should also allow for drainage. Poor drainage may result in water retention and may affect the weathering characteristics of the materials.

    Pointing

Please check the recommended joint widths for your chosen product. Many product dimensions allow for a 10-15mm joint width.

For best results a strong semi-dry mortar mix is recommended (with sufficient water content to bind but not so much as to stain the paving when introduced). Pointing is best completed as laying work progresses and should be carried out during dry spells of weather and sufficient pointing mortar should be mixed to be used within 30-45 minutes (less in hot weather conditions). After this time it may become too dry to bond. If spaces between paving are filled with sand, modified sand or decorative stone, moisture may be held in the joints and water may penetrate the sub-base for excessive periods of time, resulting in the possible occurrence of dark staining on the top surface or around the edges of the paving.

    Suitability

Manufactured products are reconstructed stone and the paving range is primarily intended for domestic landscape use. Simply Paving cannot accept any liability in respect of products being used for an inappropriate purpose.

In the unlikely event of products reaching you in less than satisfactory condition, please contact us immediately. Simply Paving cannot accept responsibility once the product has been laid.

    Efflorescence

Efflorescence emerges from pores through capillaries.

Simply Paving cannot be held responsible for this naturally occurring phenomenon, which can be characteristic in quality concrete products containing a high cement content. In their early life concrete products may exhibit an apparent loss of colour and efflorescence may appear in the form of a bloom or stain on the face of the product. This is a result of an interaction between the cement used to manufacture the paving and the natural environment

Natural stone flags can also exhibit the effects of efflorescence when laid on a mortar bed. When water is drawn up from the mortar bedding to the surface of the stone, "salts" are transported with it. Although the water will evaporate over time, the "salt" deposits will be left behind on the surface of the stone. These too will disappear over time, but can take a number of months.

Efflorescence can be a characteristic of all good quality products with a high cement content.

The effect generally disappears with the combination of the natural weathering process and the passage of time and its appearance is not detrimental to the performance of the material.

    Health and Safety

Always wear suitable safety equipment when handling our products.

Many products within our range are heavy. It is recommended that items over 25kg or those that are awkward in shape should be handled by more than one person, or suitable lifting equipment is used. It is suggested that work gloves are used to prevent abrasion to hands and lime burns from wet mortar.

Eye protection (safety goggles) should also be used when cutting with either chisels or rotary disc cutters, also respiratory protection (dust mask) should be used to avoid dust inhalation with using high speed cutters.

  • Finishing Touches

Posted on November 23, 2010 by Simply Paving

As we near the end of our Simply Do It Yourself series, we look at those little touches that not only keep your garden looking attractive, neat and well cared for but also add that extra bit of flair and pizzazz.

Create stunning garden features that really add that extra something to your outdoor space.

    Installing Edging

Bradstone Old Town Edging Weathered Limestone with Bradstone Decorative Aggregate Celtic Plum.

Whilst some edgings can be laid directly into the ground, to increase stability, a more permanent method of fixing is recommended.

This is achieved by digging a small foundation trench to the required length, approximately 100mm deep and 150mm wide. Lay concrete foundations using 6 parts ballast to 1 part cement (or 4 parts coarse aggregate to 2 parts building sand to 1 part cement).

Once the foundation mix has cured, bed the edging by gently tapping the top edge with a rubber mallet into a mortar bed of 4 parts building sand to 1 part cement, ensuring each unit is aligned and level. Back fill the reverse face of the edging with the same mortar mix "haunched" with a 45 degree wedge of mortar to a height that will be concealed by the finished surface.

    Laying Stepping Stones

If your lawns or herbaceous beds are showing signs of wear from frequent use, Bradstone Log Stepping Stones keep grass and plants safe from damage as well as adding a striking pathway.

Evenly lay the stepping stones across the lawn or border. The recommended method for measuring the spacing of the stones is to use the length of a comfortable stride.

Using the stepping stone as a template, cut away and remove the surrounding turf and soil to a depth of approximately 75mm. Backfill to a depth of 30-35mm with a semi dry mix of 5 parts grit sand to 1 part cement. Place the stepping stone and gently tap down with a rubber mallet so that it sits just below the level of the lawn.

    Using Pebbles & Gravel

Clear the required area, removing all loose material and vegetation (use weed killer if necessary on any deep rooted weeds). Lay a semi permeable membrane over the whole area, with a minimum of 50mm overlap between sheets. Lay the decorative aggregate to the required depth (50mm is sufficient for most applications but please check for any instructions specific to your product). Rake to achieve the required surface level.

Although decorative aggregates can be laid directly onto soil it is recommended to use a membrane to minimise weed growth.

It's the little details that make a big difference in the garden. Take time selecting the decorative aggregates which will add the perfect finishing touch to your design.
