  • And the winner is...

Posted on February 3, 2015 by Simply Paving

Another year and another host of fantastic entries to our photo competition. Here in the Simply Paving office, we're always astounded to see what can be achieved with the products that we have supplied and again, the standard of the entries that we have received has been incredibly high and the level of workmanship on show is superb.

It certainly wasn't easy narrowing down the entries and choosing just one winner and because of this we have chosen one outright winner who will receive a cheque for £500, second and third place entries who will receive a cheque for £200 each and then eight runners-up who will each receive a cheque for £100.

From everyone in the Simply Paving team, we'd like to thank all who entered the competition and we're certain that the images will provide a great deal of inspiration for our future customers.

The only thing to do now is reveal the results...

Our first prize winner and the much deserved recipient of a cheque for £500 is Mr Andrew Shaw of Essex with this superb example of how the clean lines, dark shades and riven profile of the Bradstone Natural Slate Paving in Blue-Black harmonise perfectly to produce a finish that would be at home in either a traditional or contemporary garden.

The contrast between the dark paving and the light brick works perfectly and the high standard of workmanship is clear to see.

Congratulations, this is a patio to be very proud of!

    Bradstone Natural Slate Paving Blue-Black

And now for the second and third place runners-up, who will each receive a cheque for £200. We're sure that you'll agree that these projects are deserving of their prize.

Mr Douglas Crisp of Wiltshire has used Bradstone Smooth Natural Sandstone Paving in Rainbow to create the perfect outdoor space for relaxing with family and friends. We can just imagine a summer afternoon sat here, perhaps even with a bottle of wine or two!

Bradstone Smooth Natural Sandstone Paving Rainbow

Miss Joyce Ward of Northamptonshire has made wonderful use of the different features available in the Bradstone Natural Sandstone Paving Sunset Buff range including a Patio Pack and a 2 Ring Circle which have both been edged with Setts. The whole look of the paved area is perfectly complemented by the planted borders of grasses and ferns.

Bradstone Natural Sandstone Paving Sunset Buff

Our eight deserving runners-up, each receiving a cheque for £100, are as follows:

Mrs Pamela Matthews of Kent will no doubt be looking forward to spring and summer this year to make the most of this sunny outdoor space. Combining both Bradstone Natural Sandstone Paving in Fossil Buff and the matching walling, Mrs Matthews has created a stunning patio with seating areas on two levels.

Bradstone Natural Sandstone Paving Fossil Buff

Our next entry is a beautiful example of a more traditional garden, combining a paved patio area of Bradstone Weathered Riven Paving Autumn Cotswold with a lawn and flower beds. We're sure you'll agree that the photograph sent in by Mrs Natalie McLagan of Guernsey shows a superb level of workmanship with the paving cut to give elegant curves.

Bradstone Weathered Riven Paving Autumn Cotswold

Mr Stuart Williams of Inverness has used Bradstone Monksbridge Block Paving in Croft to create this large, sweeping entrance. This distinctive block paving is ideal if you're looking to give your driveway a predominantly traditional and rustic feel.

Here, Mrs Fiona Trevett from Dorset demonstrates how using a combination of materials can produce a very effective modern look. The clean lines of the Bradstone Natural Limestone Paving Blue-Black in the single size of 600x600 work perfectly with the wooden decking and red brick walling to create a superb contemporary space.

    Bradstone Natural Limestone Paving Blue-Black

Our next entry shows how the mixed sizes of Bradstone's Ashbourne Paving in Cotswold can be used to create interest in a long aspect London garden. Mrs Anna Chowdhury has created an outdoor space that looks like the perfect place to while away those long summer evenings.

    Bradstone Ashbourne Paving Cotswold

Mr Nick Millward of Warwickshire totally transformed his townhouse garden using Bradstone's Carpet Stones in Rustic Red. The colour of the cobble works beautifully with the existing brick walling as well as the wooden sleepers used for the raised beds. Keep your eye out on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/simplypaving) as we will be posting before and after images to show just what a dramatic transformation has been undertaken.

Bradstone Carpet Stones Rustic Red Cobble

Here, Mr Richard Hobson of Kent has created a lovely patio area using Bradstone's Natural Sandstone Paving in Cragside. This particular stone is quite unique in that is has an aged appearance even though it has been newly quarried and it perfectly complements the existing natural stone walling.

Last but by no means least, we have an entry that made us all here in the Simply Paving office incredibly envious. Without doubt, this entry from Mr James Brewer is one of the most stunning settings that we have ever seen our products used in. And what's more, as the product has been laid in Malaga, Spain, there will be no shortage of sunny days to sit and enjoy the view by the pool. Oh, and if you were wondering, the product is Bradstone's Gironde Paving and we're sure you'll agree that it works perfectly in these surroundings.

    Wow!

Every year that we run our photo competition we are absolutely astounded by the incredibly high standard of entries that we receive. This year has been no different. The only problem that this brings is the nigh on impossible task that we have here at Simply Paving of choosing a winner!

It's taken a great deal of thought to narrow down the entries to just one outright winner and ten runners-up and we've been very careful to take into account all aspects of each entry, from design of the project, right through to the level of workmanship on display.

We'd like to thank everyone who entered the competition and we're sure that the images that have been sent in will provide future customers with bucket loads of inspiration!

All that's left for us to do is to reveal the results...

Our first prize winner and the deserved recipient of a cheque for £500 are Ms Barbara Fawcett and Mr Joe Green of Cumbria with this truly awe inspiring entry, which pictures the StoneFlair by Bradstone Smooth Natural Sandstone Paving Rainbow.

Here in the Simply Paving office, we were all so in awe of how breathtakingly beautiful this seating area is and my word, what a view! The high level of workmanship on show has really put the finishing touch to an already enviable outdoor space and we would like to offer our sincere thanks for sharing this picture with us.

StoneFlair by Bradstone Smooth Natural Sandstone Paving Rainbow

And now for the runners-up, who will each receive a cheque for £100. We're sure that you'll agree that all the projects are deserving of their prize.

Mrs Maria Joliffe from Hampshire has used Bradstone Woburn Rumbled Block Paving Autumn wonderfully to create this outdoor space, showing that block paving isn't necessarily just for driveways. It certainly looks like someone has been enjoying their new playground!

Bradstone Woburn Rumbled Block Paving Autumn

Here, Mr Chris Hearn from Kent has produced a stunning patio area using Bradstone Natural Slate Paving Vijaya Gold, which works perfectly in contrast with the buff brick walling. We were all in agreement that this looks a wonderful place to enjoy a relaxed summers day.

Bradstone Natural Slate Paving Vijaya Gold

Ms Judy Cowan designed and created this outdoor space for her 93 year old mother using StoneFlair by Bradstone Old Town Paving Grey-Green 900x600's and a StoneFlair by Bradstone Old Town Paving Grey-Green 2 Ring Circle. We're sure that you'll agree that the combination of the paving and the decorative aggregates make this beautiful and also ideal as a low maintenance garden.

StoneFlair by Bradstone Old Town Paving Grey-Green 900x600

This entry from Mr Patrick Allen from Devon has shown that functional can be beautiful. Using Bradstone Countrystone Walling Buff, they have been able to create a wall that not only serves as a perimeter boundary but also gives the property real kerb appeal! The buff block works perfectly in contrast with the Bradstone Textured Coping Grey.

    Bradstone Countrystone Walling Buff

Mr and Mrs Mayer from Kent again demonstrate how block paving can be a great option for creating a stunning patio area. They have created a contemporary outdoor space using a combination of materials and it's clear to see that the wooden sleepers and Bradstone StoneMaster Block Paving Mixed Shades Grey work perfectly together.

Bradstone StoneMaster Block Paving Mixed Shades Grey

Here we have another example of how striking the Bradstone Natural Slate Paving Vijaya Gold can be. We think you'll agree that Mr Darren Capehorn from Hampshire has created a stunning patio area which really highlights the natural beauty and variation exhibited in this stone. The Austin-Healey on display isn't bad looking either!

Bradstone Natural Slate Paving Vijaya Gold

Mr and Mrs Hawkes from Derbyshire have created a delightful patio area, combining the rich colour of the wooden decking with the rustic charm of the brick wall and the clean lines of the Bradstone Natural Slate Paving Blue-Black. The contrast of the traditional and modern works perfectly to create a relaxing space to enjoy a glass of wine!

    Bradstone Natural Slate Paving Blue-Black

Mr John Lawrie from North Lanarkshire has laid StoneFlair by Bradstone Smooth Natural Sandstone Paving Dune to create a charming outdoor area. Whilst this product can be used to create a contemporary feature, it has been used here in a more traditional setting to stunning effect.

StoneFlair by Bradstone Smooth Natural Sandstone Paving Dune

Another example of how mixing materials can create a superb finish. Here we have a lovely curved feature wall built using Bradstone Natural Sandstone Walling Autumn Green and combined with wooden decking. Mr Philip Older from Buckinghamshire has created this feature which adds real impact to the garden, choosing to dry lay the stone to give a more rustic feel.

Bradstone Natural Sandstone Walling Autumn Green

Last but by no means least, we have another excellent example of the StoneFlair by Bradstone Smooth Natural Sandstone Paving Dune, this time cut to give an elegant curved edge. We're sure you'll agree that the photograph sent in by Mr Russell Oxenden shows a superb level of workmanship.

StoneFlair by Bradstone Smooth Natural Sandstone Paving Dune

Congratulations to all of our winners and thank you to everyone who entered the competition. As with every year, the entries were all of an incredibly high standard and we here at Simply Paving had a very tough time reaching our decision. • And the winner is...

Posted on January 19, 2012 by Simply Paving

Another competition and another incredibly difficult decision.

Year after year, the standard of entries to our annual photographic competition has left us gobsmacked here in the Simply Paving office. This latest competition has been no different - we were in awe of the level of skill in both design and workmanship on show in the photographs - because of this we have chosen one outright winner who will receive a cheque of £500, a second place entry who will receive a cheque of £200 and nine runners-up who will each receive a cheque for £100.

Enough of us telling you how good the entries are, see for yourself below!

The first prize of £500 goes to Mrs Zoe and Mr Craig Lewis of North Yorkshire with this stunning entry, which really displays an incredible level of workmanship and demonstrates the clean lines and subtle tonal variations of the Bradstone StoneMaster Block Paving range. Using a mix of the three colours in the Buff shades; Dark Buff Cast, Dark Buff Washed and Light Buff Washed they have produced a very attractive driveway that perfectly replicates the look of natural sandstone block paving, which works perfectly with the brickwork of the house.

This year, for the first time we have chosen a second placed entry who will be cashing a cheque for £200.

Second place in our competition has been awarded to Mrs Jane Morris from Surrey who has created an absolutely beautiful outdoor space using Bradstone's Woburn Rumbled Block Paving Graphite. Using three sizes, the customer has created an eye-catching concentric circle design which adds interest, whilst we think you'll agree the Graphite colour works superbly with the wooden building, fencing and decking and also the planting scheme.

Our nine runners-up, each winning a prize of £100 are:

Mr Kevin Paterson from Kent who has used Bradstone Textured Paving Grey 600 x 600's to fantastic effect, creating this stunning contemporary outdoor space. Although, this product is part of our Value Range the finished job is clearly of very high quality, underlining just what can be achieved with any of our products.

Here, Mr Daniel Jones from Shropshire demonstrates how using a combination of materials can produce a very effective modern look. The decking, trellis and pergola work incredibly well when used alongside the StoneFlair by Bradstone Vogue Paving and the StoneFlair by Bradstone Polished Natural Sandstone Paving Fossil Buff.

Mr Darren Ayres from Cambridgeshire has produced a stunning outdoor space using StoneFlair by Bradstone Polished Natural Sandstone Paving Fossil Buff. It looks a wonderful place to enjoy a relaxed summers evening, perhaps even with a few beers or a bottle of wine!

In this photograph, Mrs Jennifer Floutier from Derbyshire shows that practical can be beautiful. Using Bradstone Woburn Rumbled Infilta Permeable Block Paving Rustic they have been able to create a driveway that is not only pleasing on the eye but also conforms to the legislation regarding paving the front of your home. For more information on the laying of Bradstone's range of Permeable Block Paving click here.

Mr John West from Cambridgeshire again demonstrates how one of our Value Range products can transform your outdoor space without spending the earth! This is more of a traditional feel than the earlier entry and uses Bradstone Weathered Riven Paving Weathered Cotswold 450 x 450's to create a stunning patio incorporating an access ramp.

Another example of how mixing materials can create a superb contemporary finish. Here Mr Martin Markcrow from Oxfordshire has combined wooden beds with Bradstone Decorative Aggregates Nordic Spar and StoneFlair by Bradstone Panache Long Aspect Black Textured to create both a dining area and pathways between planted areas. I think you'll agree, this photograph could have been taken straight out of Bradstone's new brochure.

Mr Mike Ellis from Flintshire has used StoneFlair by Bradstone Polished Natural Sandstone Paving Rainbow to create a charming outdoor dining area. The paving, decking and furniture work perfectly together and you can just imagine enjoying a summer salad here, unwinding after a day at work.

Ten out of ten on our next entry for both effort and Photoshop skills (we want that number plate)! Mr Phil Sutton from Cornwall has created a stunning driveway using Bradstone's Woburn Rumbled Block Paving Autumn. First impressions are important and the customer has given his property an extra touch of class and real kerb appeal.

You could be sat somewhere in the Mediterranean, but in fact you'd be sat in the garden of Mr Ray Lane from Kent. Using Bradstone Tile Paving Mellow Terracotta 300 x 300's the customer has evoked all the spirit, charm and warmth associated with true terracotta tiles.

Congratulations to all of our winners and thank you to everyone who entered the competition. The entries were all of an incredibly high standard and we here at Simply Paving had a very tough time reaching our decision. You will find many of the images entered into the competition will be featured on our website and in our gallery hopefully proving to be a source of inspiration to all of our customers.

  • Bradstone Old Riven Paving

Posted on June 28, 2011 by Simply Paving

A paving solution that's as cost effective as it is good looking.

Cut down on costs without cutting down on style. Bradstone Old Riven Paving may represent a more economical solution for your garden, but it certainly doesn't mean it won't give you a beautiful looking patio or garden feature.

On the contrary, the quality look and feel of Bradstone Old Riven Paving, along with a choice of five attractive shades, in six sizes and circle options, belie its inexpensive price tag.

Although the Bradstone Old Riven range already recreates the look and feel of natural stone superbly, why not cleverly combine the Autumn Gold, Autumn Bronze and Autumn Cotswold shades to further enhance the illusion, whilst, also taking advantage of the different sizes available to ensure that perfectly random effect.

So, how do I achieve this random natural effect?

Bradstone Old Riven Paving in three colours and three sizes (Autumn Gold, Autumn Bronze and Autumn Cotswold).

One of the more frequent requests we receive in the Simply Paving office with regard to the Old Riven range, is to calculate the quantities required to lay this product in three colours and three sizes. Below is a guide demonstrating how the Simply Paving team would work this out for you.

    1. Firstly, you will need to work out the area (in square metres) that you need to cover, which is generally a relatively simple calculation; multiply the length of the area you're looking cover by the width.

For example, if you're looking to pave a garden 5.00m long x 6.00m wide, the total area you will need to cover is 30.00m2.

    ______________________________________________

    2. Secondly, you will need to calculate the number of each size you require to cover your total area. To do this, you must first work out the total area each size covers:

    600x450 - 3.60 units per m2 - therefore each slab covers 0.278m2 (1.00m2 / 3.60 per m2 = 0.278m2)

    450x450 - 4.70 units per m2 - therefore each slab covers 0.213m2 (1.00m2 / 4.70 per m2= 0.213m2)

    300x450 - 7.00 units per m2 - therefore each slab covers 0.143m2 (1.00m2 / 7.00 per m2 = 0.143m2)

Then, add these together to find the total coverage that using one of each of these sizes will give you:

    0.278m2 + 0.213m2 + 0.143m2 = 0.634m2

    ______________________________________________

    3. Now you know the area that you need to cover and you also know the area that one of each size covers, you can calculate the total number of each size you require. To do this, divide your area by the area that the three sizes will cover:

    30.00m2 / 0.634m2 = 47.32 units of each size

    Therefore, you will require:

    48 units 600x450

    48 units 450x450

    48 units 300x450

You can check your calculations at this stage by multiplying the area that one of each size covers by the number of each size you have been given:

    0.634m2 x 48 units of each size = 30.43m2

    ______________________________________________

    4. If you wish, you can leave it here and only opt for one colour in the Old Riven range (i.e. 48 of each of the three sizes in a single colour), alternatively, if you do wish to go for the three colours, simply divide your total number of slabs in each size by 3:

    48 units / 3 = 16 units 600x450 Autumn Gold, 16 units 600x450 Autumn Bronze and 16 units 600x450 Autumn Cotswold

    48 units / 3 = 16 units 450x450 Autumn Gold, 16 units 450x450 Autumn Bronze and 16 units 450x450 Autumn Cotswold

    48 units / 3 = 16 units 300x450 Autumn Gold, 16 units 300x450 Autumn Bronze and 16 units 300x450 Autumn Cotswold

    ______________________________________________

    Hopefully that wasn't too confusing!

Now you have the quantities that you require, you can simply order the product online @ http://simplypaving.com or by calling the office on 0800 032 6306.

One last hint, before you go ahead and permanently fix the product in place, it may be advisable that you dry-lay the mix of colours and sizes in order to achieve a natural, blended appearance that is pleasing to the eye.

    What about a circle?

For that finishing touch, why not try incorporating the 2 Ring Circle feature into your design, available in all 5 colours with matching squaring off kits to allow for easy installation.

  • Create the feel... first impressions.

Posted on March 31, 2011 by Simply Paving

    First impressions are important.

What better way to create the perfect outward impression than with a strikingly attractive and exceptionally distinctive driveway at the front of your house. Block paving not only gives your driveway a touch of class and your house real kerb appeal, it also represents an extremely practical and durable solution that will continue to look good though the years.

With Bradstone’s help, let Simply Paving show you how.

    • Bradstone Traditional Block Paving evokes the spirit and charm of times gone by incorporating subtle shading and cobbled effect.
    • Products such as the Bradstone Magnablock Block Paving are incredibly versatile and hard wearing. Suitable for paths and patios as well as driveways.
    • Bradstone Infilta Block Paving, the answer to legislation on permeable driveways. This product allows rainwater to filter though gaps between the blocks into a stone sub-base below, where there is enough space to store the water for a short time. This water then either soaks into the ground, is discharged in a controlled manner to a surface water drainage system or is collected for re-use.
    • Bradstone Monksbridge Block Paving in Croft is a distinctive block paving solution, ideal if you're looking to give your driveway a predominantly traditional and rustic feel. With its range of subtle hues and charming weather worn appearance, it looks every inch the product of a different era.
    • Decorative aggregates are an easy to use, economical, permeable driveway solution.
    • It's not just about block paving as shown in the parking area using decorative aggregates divided by a StoneFlair by Bradstone Honeymede pathway.
    • Bradstone Driveway Block Paving provides just as handsome a solution for patios and paths as it does for drives.
    • Bradstone Woburn Rumbled Block Paving is a charming cobble-type paving that exhibits a softer surface and also incorporates smooth rounded edges, enhancing the weathered appearance and slightly mottled effect.
    • The environmental alternative, Bradstone StoneMaster Block Paving is a 50% recycled concrete product that looks just like natural sandstone. It also comes pre-treated with Bradstone Surface Protection guarding against everyday contaminants such as oil, grease, moss, bird droppings, wine and soft drinks to ease cleaning when used on drives and patios.

If you require any help, give the Simply Paving office a call on 0800 032 6306 or drop us an email and we will try to assist you in all aspects of your landscaping project.

  • Small on space, big on possibilities.

Posted on March 31, 2011 by Simply Paving

No matter how small the garden, there's always room for a little imagination.

Whether you want to create a usable garden space in a small area or simply want a garden that looks great from your window, trust Bradstone with its wealth of beautiful landscaping products to help fire your creativity and bring out the designer in you. Make the most of every nook and cranny and turn all the negatives of a limited garden area into positives.

Don't let the challenge of a small garden area put you off. With help from Bradstone and Simply Paving you can still create a wonderful garden design full of interest and impact.

Here are Bradstone’s top tips for making the most of your small garden space.

    • Planning is key. With space at such a premium, you've got to think more carefully than ever about what goes where.
    • Remember to let the purpose dictate the design. For instance, if your garden's for entertaining you'll have to fit seating in somewhere.
    • Add a sense of depth. Build raised beds and borders that can also be a space saving way of incorporating seating.
    • Mix dark coloured plants with bright coloured blooms. These add both depth and visual appeal.
    • Avoid small trees that constantly shed foliage or seeds. This way sweeping up won't become a daily task.
    • Have you got room for containers? Big planters and pots can look fantastic in small gardens and are great for adding focal points.
    • Add the impression of more space. Make paving run lengthways for a longer looking garden, while mirrors also deceive the eye and add light.
    • Link the garden to your house. Do this with paving that echoes the brickwork or internal flooring, blurring the divide between inside and out.

  • Create the feel... cottage garden.

Posted on March 31, 2011 by Simply Paving

Fancy recalling the charm of yesteryear with a beautiful cottage garden?

You don't have to live in a cottage to create your own cottage garden paradise. You don't even have to live in the country. In fact, you can create a cottage garden just about anywhere, because cottage gardens are all about achieving an informal style and design, where dense planting and traditional materials combine to make the most of what are normally quite small garden spaces.

Courtesy of Bradstone, Simply Paving have everything you need to help you turn your cottage garden dream into a stunning reality.

Here are Bradstone’s top tips to help you achieve that classic country garden look.

    • Remember, with cottage gardens, the plan is... there is no plan. The more haphazard the planting the better. Messy is in.
    • Create the frame. Enclose your garden with the archetypal picket fence look - or what about a Bradstone wall draped in clematis?
    • Evoke the spirit of the past. Choose popular traditional plants such as foxgloves and snapdragons, pansies and columbines.
    • Say hello to the edible landscape. Eating what you grow is all the rage and traditionally, cottage gardens were a practical source of food and herbs.
    • Use rockery stone or different edging styles. These are a great way to prevent grass from spilling over into your planting and add real visual interest.
    • Do away with the lawn altogether. Focus instead on creating a jumbled look, a chaotic profusion of plants; add a Bradstone path or stepping stones to wind through the planting.

    • StoneFlair by Bradstone Tuscany Paving works in both contemporary and traditional settings.
    • Choose plants with a traditional theme, such as box privet.
    • Geraniums come in many colours and are great as bedding plants and equally at home in planters.
    • Decorative aggregates complete the look and give texture and definition at the edges of paved areas.
    • Decorative aggregates encourage the growth of rockery plants.
    • The right complementary edging will always create the ideal finish to all paving.
    • Imperata Cylindrica (Red Barron) is quite spectacular and can be grown in containers.
    • Using accessories that complement the colours of plants will create a more coordinated look to your garden.
    • The traditional StoneFlair by Bradstone Bamburgh Mill Star circle feature kit can be used as a stunning centrepiece.
